| 二人の若い紳士が、すっかりイギリスの兵隊のかたちをして、ぴかぴかする鉄砲をかついで、白熊のような犬を二疋つれて、だいぶ山奥の、木の葉のかさかさしたとこを、こんなことを云いながら、あるいておりました。 | Two young gentlemen were trekking through fallen leaves deep in the mountains. They wore red British army coats and had glinting guns slung across their back. Two big white dogs that looked like polar bears followed behind them. |
| 「ぜんたい、ここらの山は怪けしからんね。 | “This mountain is ridiculous,” said one of the gentlemen, |
| 鳥も獣も一疋も居やがらん。なんでも構わないから、早くタンタアーンと、やって見たいもんだなあ。」 | “ we haven’t seen a single bird or any animal. I just want to take a shot at something, I don’t care what.” |
| 「鹿の黄いろな横っ腹なんぞに、二三発お見舞みまいもうしたら、ずいぶん痛快だろうねえ。 | “Can you imagine taking two, three shots at a deer. It would be so thrilling. |
| くるくるまわって、それからどたっと倒れるだろうねえ。」 | I would probably get dizzy enough to fall over from the excitement.” |
| それはだいぶの山奥でした。 | By this point, they were in the deepest depths of the mountains. |
| 案内してきた専門の鉄砲打ちも、ちょっとまごついて、どこかへ行ってしまったくらいの山奥でした。 | So deep, the hunter they had brought as a guide wasn’t even sure where they were any more. |
| それに、あんまり山が物凄いので、その白熊のような犬が、二疋いっしょにめまいを起こして、しばらく吠って、それから泡を吐いて死んでしまいました。 | The dogs found their trip in the mountains too difficult. |
| 「じつにぼくは、二千四百円の損害だ」 | They started to spin about, whine, and foam at the mouth. Then they fell over dead. |
| と一人の紳士が、その犬の眼を、ちょっとかえしてみて言いました。 | “That’ll put me back 2400 yen,” |
| 「ぼくは二千八百円の損害だ。」 | said one of the gentlemen, examining his dogs eyes. |
| と、もひとりが、くやしそうに、あたまをまげて言いました。 | “Mine was 2800,” |
| はじめの紳士は、すこし顔いろを悪くして、じっと、もひとりの紳士の、顔つきを見ながら云いました。 | said the other, looking down sadly. |
| 「ぼくはもう戻もどろうとおもう。」 | The first, whose face had paled, looked at the other, |
| 「さあ、ぼくもちょうど寒くはなったし腹は空いてきたし戻ろうとおもう。」 | “I think we should head back.” |
| 「そいじゃ、これで切りあげよう。なあに戻りに、昨日の宿屋で、山鳥を拾円も買って帰ればいい。」 | “I’m starting to get cold, and a bit hungry. Let’s head back.” |
| 「兎もでていたねえ。そうすれば結局おんなじこった。では帰ろうじゃないか」 | “Alright, we’ll stop here. On the way back, we can stop at the inn we stayed in yesterday and buy a pheasant to take home for 10 yen.” |
| ところがどうも困ったことは、どっちへ行けば戻れるのか、いっこうに見当がつかなくなっていました。 | “I think they had rabbits too. If we brought one of those back as well, no one will know the difference.” |
| 風がどうと吹いてきて、草はざわざわ、木の葉はかさかさ、木はごとんごとんと鳴りました。 | But they had one problem. They had no idea which way to go. |
| 「どうも腹が空いた。さっきから横っ腹が痛くてたまらないんだ。」 | A gust of wind rushed past. The grass swished, the leaves rustled, and the trees creaked. |
| 「ぼくもそうだ。もうあんまりあるきたくないな。」 | “I am starving. My sides just started hurting.” |
| 「あるきたくないよ。ああ困ったなあ、何かたべたいなあ。」 | “Mine too, I don’t know if I can walk any further.” |
| 「喰べたいもんだなあ」 | “Me neither. This is bad, I just want food.” |
| 二人の紳士は、ざわざわ鳴るすすきの中で、こんなことを云いました。 | “So hungry.” |
| その時ふとうしろを見ますと、立派な一軒いっけんの西洋造りの家がありました。 | The young gentlemen continued to complain as they walked through the swishing tall grass. |
| そして玄関には「西洋料理店 山猫軒」という札がでていました。 | At one point, not knowing why, they looked back. There they saw a single, elegant Western-style home. |
| 「君、ちょうどいい。ここはこれでなかなか開けてるんだ。入ろうじゃないか」 | Hanging above the front-door was a sign that read: “Restaurant Western-style cooking Wildcat House” |
| 「おや、こんなとこにおかしいね。しかしとにかく何か食事ができるんだろう」 | “Perfect, and it looks like they’re open. Shall we go in?” |
| 「もちろんできるさ。看板にそう書いてあるじゃないか」 | “Woah, it’s weird to see something way out here. I wonder if they cook?” |
| 「はいろうじゃないか。ぼくはもう何か喰べたくて倒れそうなんだ。」 | “Of course they can. The sign says so.” |
| 二人は玄関に立ちました。玄関は白い瀬戸の煉瓦で組んで、実に立派なもんです。 | “Then we should go in. I don’t know how much longer I can go without eating.” |
| そして硝子の開き戸がたって、そこに金文字でこう書いてありました。 | The two went up to the entrance, which was surrounded by beautiful white tiles. |
| 「どなたもどうかお入りください。決してご遠慮はありません」 | The entrance was a sliding door made from glass with gold-lettering that said, |
| 二人はそこで、ひどくよろこんで言いました。 | “Everyone’s welcome. Don’t worry about a thing.” |
| 「こいつはどうだ、やっぱり世の中はうまくできてるねえ、きょう一日なんぎしたけれど、こんどはこんないいこともある。 | Seeing the sign, the two perked up. |
| このうちは料理店だけれどもただでご馳走ちそうするんだぜ。」 | One said, “Would you look at that; we live in a wonderful world. We spent the whole day in suffering, then we find a nice place like this. |
| 「どうもそうらしい。決してご遠慮はありませんというのはその意味だ。」 | Even though it’s a restaurant, the food is free, right?” |
| 二人は戸を押おして、なかへ入りました。 | “Looks like it. That’s what ‘Don’t worry about a thing’ means, right?” |
| そこはすぐ廊下ろうかになっていました。 | The two pushed open the door and went in. |
| その硝子戸の裏側には、金文字でこうなっていました。 | They found themselves in a hallway. |
| 「ことに肥ふとったお方や若いお方は、大歓迎いたします」 | Closing the door, they noticed written on the back of the door, |
| 二人は大歓迎というので、もう大よろこびです。 | “a special welcome to our young and plump guests.” |
| 「君、ぼくらは大歓迎にあたっているのだ。」 | Seeing that they received a special welcome, the gentlemen grew even happier. |
| 「ぼくらは両方兼ねてるから」 | “Look, we’re getting a special welcome!” |
| ずんずん廊下を進んで行きますと、こんどは水いろのペンキ塗りの扉とがありました。 | “Well, we are both those things.” |
| 「どうも変な家うちだ。どうしてこんなにたくさん戸があるのだろう。」 | They walked quickly down the hallway, this time reaching a door painted a light blue. |
| 「これはロシア式だ。寒いとこや山の中はみんなこうさ。」 | “What a weird building. Why does it have so many doors?” |
| そして二人はその扉をあけようとしますと、上に黄いろな字でこう書いてありました。 | “It’s the Russian style. In cold places, like up in the mountains, all the buildings are like this.” |
| 「当軒は注文の多い料理店ですからどうかそこはご承知ください」 | When they went to push open the door, they noticed in yellow writing above them, |
| 「なかなかはやってるんだ。こんな山の中で。」 | “This restaurant has many orders, please bear with us.” |
| 「それあそうだ。見たまえ、東京の大きな料理屋だって大通りにはすくないだろう」 | “This place is pretty popular for being up in the mountains.” |
| 二人は云いながら、その扉をあけました。するとその裏側に、 | “Not even the big roads in Tokyo have many nice restaurants like this.” |
| 「注文はずいぶん多いでしょうがどうか一々こらえて下さい。」 | They went through the door and found written on the back, |
| 「これはぜんたいどういうんだ。」 | “we have quite many orders. Please forgive each one.” |
| ひとりの紳士は顔をしかめました。 | “What is that supposed to mean,” |
| 「うん、これはきっと注文があまり多くて支度が手間取るけれどもごめん下さいと斯ういうことだ。」 | said one of the gentlemen, scrunching up his face. |
| 「そうだろう。早くどこか室の中にはいりたいもんだな。」 | “I’m sure it means that they have a lot of orders and some of them take a lot of time, so please excuse us.” |
| 「そしてテーブルに座りたいもんだな。」 | “Is that it? I just want to get into the restaurant.” |
| ところがどうもうるさいことは、また扉が一つありました。 | “I just want to sit at a table.” |
| そしてそのわきに鏡がかかって、その下には長い柄のついたブラシが置いてあったのです。 | But, to their dismay, they just found another door. |
| 扉には赤い字で、 | Next to the door stood a mirror, and below that was a long-handled brush. |
| 「お客さまがた、ここで髪をきちんとして、それからはきものの泥を落してください。」と書いてありました。 | On the door in red letters was written, |
| 「これはどうも尤もだ。僕もさっき玄関で、山のなかだとおもって見くびったんだよ」 | “Honored guests, please take a moment to do your hair and clean the mud off of your shoes.” |
| 「作法の厳しい家だ。きっとよほど偉い人たちが、たびたび来るんだ。」 | “That makes a lot of sense. I was thinking back when we came in that this place couldn’t be that nice if it’s up in the mountains.” |
| そこで二人は、きれいに髪をけずって、靴の泥を落しました。 | “This place is pretty strict about good manners. They must receive a lot of very important visitors.” |
| そしたら、どうです。ブラシを板の上に置くや否いなや、そいつがぼうっとかすんで無くなって、風がどうっと室の中に入ってきました。 | The two brushed their hair and cleaned the mud off of their shoes. |
| 二人はびっくりして、互によりそって、扉をがたんと開けて、次の室へ入って行きました。 | Then, when they put the brush back, it faded and disappeared. Soon after, a draft rushed through the room. |
| 早く何か暖いものでもたべて、元気をつけて置かないと、もう途方もないことになってしまうと、二人とも思ったのでした。 | The two, startled, huddled together, and the door to the next room slammed open. So they went through it. |
| 扉の内側に、また変なことが書いてありました。 | They only thought about how much they wanted something warm to eat to cheer them up. |
| 「鉄砲と弾丸をここへ置いてください。」 | This door had strange things written on the back of it as well, |
| 見るとすぐ横に黒い台がありました。 | “please leave your guns and ammunition here.” |
| 「なるほど、鉄砲を持ってものを食うという法はない。」 | Looking into the room, they saw a black stand next to the door. |
| 「いや、よほど偉いひとが始終来ているんだ。」 | “That makes sense. Bringing guns in with you when you eat is bad manners.” |
| 二人は鉄砲をはずし、帯皮を解いて、それを台の上に置きました。 | “They must have a lot of important people come.” |
| また黒い扉がありました。 | They unstrapped their guns, took off their ammo belts, and put them on the stand. |
| 「どうか帽子と外套と靴をおとり下さい。」 | The room ended in a black door with more words written on it, |
| 「どうだ、とるか。」 | “Please leave your hats, jackets, and shoes here.” |
| 「仕方ない、とろう。たしかによっぽどえらいひとなんだ。奥に来ているのは」 | “What do you think? Should we just leave our stuff here?” |
| 二人は帽子とオーバーコートを釘にかけ、靴をぬいでぺたぺたあるいて扉の中にはいりました。 | “What else can we do? Really important people must come here.” |
| 扉の裏側には、 | They took off their hats and overcoats and hung them on pegs in the wall. Then they took off their shoes and went into the next room. |
| 「ネクタイピン、カフスボタン、眼鏡、財布、その他金物類、ことに尖がったものは、みんなここに置いてください」 | On the back of the door was written, |
| と書いてありました。扉のすぐ横には黒塗りの立派な金庫も、ちゃんと口を開けて置いてありました。鍵まで添えてあったのです。 | “Please leave all tie pins, cufflinks, glasses, wallets and any other metal or sharp object here.” |
| 「ははあ、何かの料理に電気をつかうと見えるね。金気のものはあぶない。ことに尖ったものはあぶないと斯う云うんだろう。」 | Next to the door was a elegantly-painted black vault with its door left open. Even the lock looked fancy. |
| 「そうだろう。して見ると勘定かんじょうは帰りにここで払はらうのだろうか。」 | “Aha, the restaurant must use electric lights. I’ve heard that metal can cause trouble with the electrical systems. Sharp objects are especially dangerous.” |
| 「どうもそうらしい。」 | “That makes sense. It looks like this is where we pay on the way out, too.” |
| 「そうだ。きっと。」 | “It certainly seems that way.” |
| 二人はめがねをはずしたり、カフスボタンをとったり、みんな金庫のなかに入れて、ぱちんと錠をかけました。 | They took off their glasses and cufflinks, put them in the safe, and turned the lock. |
| すこし行きますとまた扉があって、その前に硝子の壺が一つありました。扉には斯う書いてありました。 | Going a little further, they found another door, this time with a glass pitcher in front of it. |
| 「壺のなかのクリームを顔や手足にすっかり塗ってください。」 | “Please cover your face, hands, and feet with the cream in the pitcher.” |
| みるとたしかに壺のなかのものは牛乳のクリームでした。 | Looking in the pitcher, they found that it really was filled with cream. |
| 「クリームをぬれというのはどういうんだ。」 | “Why do they want us to put cream on?” |
| 「これはね、外がひじょうに寒いだろう。室のなかがあんまり暖いとひびがきれるから、その予防なんだ。 | “Well, it’s really cold outside, right? Inside the restaurant will be pretty warm, so it will dry out our skin. The cream is to prevent that. |
| どうも奥には、よほどえらいひとがきている。こんなとこで、案外ぼくらは、貴族とちかづきになるかも知れないよ。」 | Some really important people must come here. Think about what kind of aristocrats we’re likely to meet.” |
| 二人は壺のクリームを、顔に塗って手に塗ってそれから靴下をぬいで足に塗りました。 | So they put the cream on their face and on their hands. Then they took off their socks and put cream on their feet as well. |
| それでもまだ残っていましたから、それは二人ともめいめいこっそり顔へ塗るふりをしながら喰べました。 | There was some cream left over, so, pretending to put some more on their face, they ate some of it as well. |
| それから大急ぎで扉をあけますと、その裏側には、 | They hurried through the door to find written on the other side, |
| 「クリームをよく塗りましたか、耳にもよく塗りましたか、」 | “Did you use enough cream? Did you remember your ears?” |
| と書いてあって、ちいさなクリームの壺がここにも置いてありました。 | Next to the writing was a small pitcher of cream. |
| 「そうそう、ぼくは耳には塗らなかった。あぶなく耳にひびを切らすとこだった。ここの主人はじつに用意周到だね。」 | “I did forget my ears. It would be terrible if my ears chapped. The owner must be very thorough.” |
| 「ああ、細かいとこまでよく気がつくよ。ところでぼくは早く何か喰べたいんだが、どうも斯うどこまでも廊下じゃ仕方ないね。」 | “What attention to detail. I really want to get something to eat. How long does this hallway go for. I guess we just have to keep going.” |
| するとすぐその前に次の戸がありました。 | Going only a little further, they reached the next door, |
| 「料理はもうすぐできます。 | “The food is almost ready. |
| 十五分とお待たせはいたしません。 | The wait is less than 15 minutes. |
| すぐたべられます。 | Dinner will be served shortly. |
| 早くあなたの頭に瓶の中の香水をよく振りかけてください。」 | Please apply the cologne in this bottle quickly.” |
| そして戸の前には金ピカの香水の瓶が置いてありました。 | In front of the door was a sparkling gold bottle. |
| 二人はその香水を、頭へぱちゃぱちゃ振りかけました。ところがその香水は、どうも酢のような匂いがするのでした。 | The two splashed the cologne on. |
| 「この香水はへんに酢くさい。どうしたんだろう。」 | “This cologne smells weirdly like vinegar. What’s up wit that?” |
| 「まちがえたんだ。下女が風邪でも引いてまちがえて入れたんだ。」 | “There must have been a mix-up. One of the maids must have caught a cold and filled the wrong bottles.” |
| 二人は扉をあけて中にはいりました。 | The two went into the next room. |
| 扉の裏側には、大きな字で斯う書いてありました。 | On the back side of the door was written, |
| 「いろいろ注文が多くてうるさかったでしょう。お気の毒でした。 | “our sincerest apologies for the many orders. |
| もうこれだけです。どうかからだ中に、壺の中の塩をたくさんよくもみ込んでください。」 | This is the last of it. Take lots of the salt in this jar and rub it all over.” |
| なるほど立派な青い瀬戸の塩壺は置いてありましたが、こんどというこんどは二人ともぎょっとしてお互にクリームをたくさん塗った顔を見合せました。 | Next to the the door was a ceramic blue jar filled with salt. The two, startled by the request, looked at each other’s cream-covered face. |
| 「どうもおかしいぜ。」 | “This is pretty strange.” |
| 「ぼくもおかしいとおもう。」 | “I agree.” |
| 「沢山の注文というのは、向うがこっちへ注文してるんだよ。」 | “When it says many orders, it means that they take the orders over here, right?” |
| 「だからさ、西洋料理店というのは、ぼくの考えるところでは、西洋料理を、来た人にたべさせるのではなくて、来た人を西洋料理にして、食べてやる家とこういうことなんだ。 | “I’m starting to think that when it says ‘Western-style restaurant,’ it doesn’t mean that we’ll be served Western-style cooking. |
| これは、その、つ、つ、つ、つまり、ぼ、ぼ、ぼくらが……。」 | It means that the guests are cooked up as Western-style food. S, s, s, s, so, w, w, w, we. . .,” |
| がたがたがたがた、ふるえだしてもうものが言えませんでした。 | one of the gentlemen chattered. He was shivering so much he couldn’t speak any more. |
| 「その、ぼ、ぼくらが、……うわあ。」 | “You mean w, w, w, we. . . ooohhh,” |
| がたがたがたがたふるえだして、もうものが言えませんでした。 | and the other gentleman shivered until he couldn’t speak. |
| 「遁げ……。」 | “R, run,” |
| がたがたしながら一人の紳士はうしろの戸を押おそうとしましたが、どうです、戸はもう一分も動きませんでした。 | one of the young men squeaked out. He spun around and pushed on the door behind him. But the door wouldn’t move at all. |
| 奥の方にはまだ一枚扉があって、大きなかぎ穴が二つつき、銀いろのホークとナイフの形が切りだしてあって、 | In the other direction was one more door. In the door were two giant keyholes and a giant silver fork and knife were cut into it. |
| 「いや、わざわざご苦労です。 | “Thank you for your hard work. |
| 大へん結構にできました。 | You look very well done. |
| さあさあおなかにおはいりください。」 | Come now, get in my stomach,” |
| と書いてありました。 | was written on the door. |
| おまけにかぎ穴からはきょろきょろ二つの青い眼玉めだまがこっちをのぞいています。 | Making matters worse, two pairs of blue eyes appeared peeking through the key holes. |
| 「うわあ。」がたがたがたがた。 | “Waaaaaaa,” chattered one gentleman. |
| 「うわあ。」がたがたがたがた。 | “Waaaaaaa,” chattered the other. |
| ふたりは泣き出しました。 | Then the two started to cry. |
| すると戸の中では、こそこそこんなことを云っています。 | Some whispering came from behind the door, |
| 「だめだよ。もう気がついたよ。塩をもみこまないようだよ。」 | “We’re done for. They figure us out. And they didn’t even salt themselves.” |
| 「あたりまえさ。親分の書きようがまずいんだ。あすこへ、いろいろ注文が多くてうるさかったでしょう、お気の毒でしたなんて、間抜けたことを書いたもんだ。」 | “Of course not. The boss is a terrible writer. ‘Our sincerest apologies for the many orders.’ That’s just dumb.” |
| 「どっちでもいいよ。どうせぼくらには、骨も分けて呉やしないんだ。」 | “Whatever. Anyways, do you think he’ll share the bones with us?” |
| 「それはそうだ。けれどももしここへあいつらがはいって来なかったら、それはぼくらの責任だぜ。」 | “Probably, but if those two don’t come in here, it will be our fault.” |
| 「呼ぼうか、呼ぼう。おい、お客さん方、早くいらっしゃい。いらっしゃい。いらっしゃい。 | “Should we call out to them. I’m going to call out to them. Hello good sirs. Come in quickly. Come in, come in. |
| お皿さらも洗ってありますし、菜っ葉ももうよく塩でもんで置きました。 | The plate is washed, the vegetables have been salted. |
| あとはあなたがたと、菜っ葉をうまくとりあわせて、まっ白なお皿にのせるだけです。はやくいらっしゃい。」 | We just need to mix you in the salad and put it on a nice white plate. Come in quickly.” |
| 「へい、いらっしゃい、いらっしゃい。それともサラドはお嫌きらいですか。 | “Hello, hello. Is it that you don’t like salad? |
| そんならこれから火を起してフライにしてあげましょうか。 | I could start up a fire and fry you if you’d like. |
| とにかくはやくいらっしゃい。」 | Just come in quickly” |
| 二人はあんまり心を痛めたために、顔がまるでくしゃくしゃの紙屑のようになり、お互にその顔を見合せ、ぶるぶるふるえ、声もなく泣きました。 | - |
| 中ではふっふっとわらってまた叫さけんでいます。 | - |
| 「いらっしゃい、いらっしゃい。そんなに泣いては折角せっかくのクリームが流れるじゃありませんか。へい、ただいま。じきもってまいります。さあ、早くいらっしゃい。」 | - |
| 「早くいらっしゃい。親方がもうナフキンをかけて、ナイフをもって、舌なめずりして、お客さま方を待っていられます。」 | “Quickly, come in. The boss has his napkin on, his knife in hand, and he’s licking his lips. You’re making him wait.” |
| 二人は泣いて泣いて泣いて泣いて泣きました。 | The two gentlemen cried and cried and cried. |
| そのときうしろからいきなり、 | Then suddenly from behind them they heard, |
| 「わん、わん、ぐゎあ。」という声がして、 | “woof woof, grr.” |
| あの白熊のような犬が二疋、扉をつきやぶって室の中に飛び込んできました。 | The two dogs that looked like polar bears broke through the door and leapt into the room. |
| 鍵穴の眼玉はたちまちなくなり、 | The eyes behind the keyholes disappeared. |
| 犬どもはううとうなってしばらく室の中をくるくる廻っていましたが、また一声「わん。」と高く吠ほえて、いきなり次の扉に飛びつきました。 | The dogs howled and paced the room. Then, with a loud bark, the dogs pounced at the door, which slammed open. |
| 戸はがたりとひらき、犬どもは吸い込まれるように飛んで行きました。 | They jumped through the door so quickly it looked like they had been sucked in. |
| その扉の向うのまっくらやみのなかで、「にゃあお、くゎあ、ごろごろ。」という声がして、それからがさがさ鳴りました。 | “Meow, hiss, purr,” came from the other side of the door, followed by the sound of fighting. |
| 室はけむりのように消え、二人は寒さにぶるぶるふるえて、草の中に立っていました。 | Suddenly, the room faded from view, like smoke. The two started to shiver from the cold, unexpectedly finding themselves standing in some grass. |
| 見ると、上着や靴くつや財布さいふやネクタイピンは、あっちの枝えだにぶらさがったり、こっちの根もとにちらばったりしています。 | Looking around, they found their coats and shoes and wallets and tiepins hanging from different branches and laying at the trunks of different trees. |
| 風がどうと吹ふいてきて、草はざわざわ、木の葉はかさかさ、木はごとんごとんと鳴りました。 | A gust of wind rushed past. The grass swished, the leaves rustled, and the trees creaked. |
| 犬がふうとうなって戻ってきました。 | The dogs whined and returned to their masters. |
| そしてうしろからは、「旦那あ、旦那あ、」と叫ぶものがあります。 | From behind them, they heard a voice calling, “Masters, masters!” |
| 二人は俄に元気がついて「おおい、おおい、ここだぞ、早く来い。」と叫びました。 | The two perked up and called back, “hey, hey, we’re over here. Come quick.” |
| 簔帽子をかぶった専門の猟師が、草をざわざわ分けてやってきました。 | Their rainhat-wearing guide pushed through the grass. |
| そこで二人はやっと安心しました。 | The two gentlemen were relieved. |
| そして猟師のもってきた団子をたべ、途中で十円だけ山鳥を買って東京に帰りました。 | And so, they ate the dumplings their guide brought with them, and on the way down the mountain they bought a pheasant to bring back to Tokyo. |
